Artist Statement

Simply, doing my best to live my best life post cancer. Making art and supporting other artists* is a huge part of my best life. I have no end goal other than to create something that allows me to explore various techniques and mediums and ultimately, in the process, brings me pleasure and peace. I sincerely hope others enjoy my art as well. Drawn to nature, it is often the subject of my work. Regardless of the subject matter, I must have an emotional connection to a piece or it simply doesn't work. *I have handled the Facebook and Instagram accounts single handedly for A New Leaf Gallery in Floyd, VA SINCE June 2019 until recently. Now I handle the posts for all but four of the gallery artists. Like herding cats...but great fun. 😁

About the Artist

After a cancer diagnosis, treatment and surgeries it became clear to Selena and her husband Ken they had no time to waste. This hastened a permanent, fulltime move to Floyd and their Happy Place followed by the construction of Selena’s art studio, aka The Happy Shack. This has allowed Selena to follow dream of being an artist. Having always been making or drawing “something,” to include illustrations on teaching guides for her seventh grade students, a love affair with pastels and portraits and a brief tumultuous period with watercolors, Selena has been delving into highly textured acrylic painting, alcohol inks and the exploration of mixed media collage to create her art. Very much inspired by nature, much of what she creates intones nature’s influence. In fact, weather permitting you’ll find her on the porch of The Happy Shack Art Studio, under the walnut tree in the front yard or on the back deck of the Happy Place creating art, tending her many potted flowers or simply enjoying the gift of being alive in the most magical place in the world…her home in Floyd, VA.
