What are memories other than an ephemeral manifestation of a fleeting moment in time. As a photographer I’m constantly recording memories for myself and others in an attempt to evoke an emotional response from the viewer. I recently discovered the emerging technology of AI, artificial intelligence, generated imaging. These AI engines rely on input from the user to produce images. The prompts can be written text or pictures that the engine uses to randomly generate an image. The engines have “learned” how to produce an image from text prompts or pictures by having been programmed with millions or even billions of pictures and written descriptions. They then produce an image using these “memories” that they’ve been fed. In effect, the images that I’ve “created” are a combination of my memories and the artificial “memories” of the AI engine. Random mechanical memories of a moment in time that never truly existed. Is it art? That’s for you to decide.
