Artist Statement
"Trillium Lost" depicts my young son and his friend, at home and in place in the forest. The tree and forest are a real place that have since been lost to bulldozing by The Mountain Valley Pipeline. The trilliums, spring ephemerals, depend upon the full forest ecosystem and are entwined in the life of the giant trees, as we all are.

Melissa West is an environmental educator and preschool teacher. She makes art that explores the importance of place.
