Artist Statement

The exploration of techniques ranges from traditional loom methodology building upon our American Appalachian Folk Art and Craft heritage to innovative contemporary fiber constructions.  My work has been influenced by John Cage’s Chance Operations, Bauhaus artist Anni Albers, mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci and the large scale works of Magdalena Abakanowicz.

Spatial concepts are investigated through layering large scale elements in space and interactions of two and three dimensional pieces. The explorations also investigate texture and natural materials using sisal, jute, rope, and varieties of textures obtained through their use.

The intention is to elevate the craft of weaving to fiber art.   For me the satisfaction of the work results from the doing.   Interest is in the search and experimentation of technique . . .  investigation . . . spontaneity . . . intuition . . .  surprise . . .  and doing . . . always doing.

About the Artist

More than 60 years ago I acquired my first loom, or rather pieces of a loom discovered in a junk yard.  Since then there have been floor looms, table looms, back strap looms, inkle looms, barn looms, tapestry looms, and even a 2 story tall frame loom. Now in my eighties, I continue to pursue my art in my studio on our Appalachian family farm in Southwest Virginia.

Work has been selected for juried exhibits including Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Chrysler Museum, Peninsula Fine Arts Center, Savannah College of Art and Design, University of Illinois, Perspective, Armory, Holtzman Art Galleries as  well as the Moss Art Center at Virginia Tech.

I am the recipient of the Allied Professions Award by the Virginia Society American institute of Architects.   I have also been awarded Certificates of Distinction and Awards from numerous national juried fiber exhibits.
