Artist Statement

About the Artist

I am a visual and performing artist.  As songwriter and lead singer of Radar Rose for 32 years, I still use that platform for fundraising for non-profits. I own One World Face & Body Art and offer henna and face painting at events all over the southeast.  As I realized this business would be a non-starter at the outset of the Covid epidemic, I began a journey inward to reinvent myself.   A large part of my work inspects my inner connection to my heritage, religion and ancestors. My creative practice is about processing, understanding and healing the traumas woven into my body. These traumas include both my own and those that had their genesis generations in the past.  By representing my family history in creative practice, I learn to grow my ear and empathy for other’s stories and lineages. I find by embodying my lineage and understanding exactly how this weaves into the story of this country, I can accept culpability in colonial systems of racism, capitalism, and sexism.  Emerging from white denial feels transformative, naked and groundbreaking.

Jane Gabrielle is a visual and performing artist. She studied art at VCU and sculpture at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. As songwriter and lead singer of the critically-acclaimed band Radar Rose for 32 years, she continues to use the platform for fund-raising for non-profits such as Southwest Virginia Food Bank and WVTF 89.1 NPR Radio.  Presently, she is finishing her BFA in Socially-Engaged Art at Goddard College.
